For several years the women of the New Destiny Cooperative have been working to create a tailoring business. With sewing machines and lessons from African Road, they have moved from a remote location without electricity to a storefront in the market.

They had the knowledge, experience, location, and client base. In May of 2013, the women developed a business plan – with a one-time capital investment, they could acquire the full inventory and display racks needed to take the tailoring business from struggling to sustainable in a short time.

Thanks to a generous grant, African Road was able to fund their plan. In September 2013, the women began the work of constructing shelving and counters, purchasing needed machines and repairing the existing ones, and stocking the shop with supplies. What a transformation! What a privilege to witness the difference being made.

Not only are the women generating business from people walking by and seeing the newly outfitted store, they are also visibly empowered and encouraged – a beacon of hope to the community.

The tailoring business benefits all 60 of the New Destiny members. As the cooperative generates income, each member receives her share and is able to attain nutrition, health, shelter, education, and security for herself, her children, and everyone she cares for.
